Overview

The Lead MRI Technologist performs and oversees the daily functions of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Under general supervision of the radiologist, performs MRI examinations and procedures according to established policies and protocols and patient's age-specific needs. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing patients, operating MRI and related equipment, and administering contrast media as prescribed. Performs MRI procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical details. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment with ingenuity and initiative for accurate diagnosis. Assumes responsibility for maintaining safety in designated areas or procedures. The MR Safety Officer (MRSO) provides clinical services according to MRI practice standards and acts as a resource to administration, MRI students and other technologists, to ensure optimal department functions. The MR Safety Officer is responsible for creating, operationalizing, enforcing and auditing MR safe practices.

Responsibilities

Oversees the daily operations and staff scheduling for the MRI department. Performs all functions of MRI protocols, practice standards, techniques and examinations. Ensures that exams are complete, high quality diagnostic images for the Radiologist. Administers contrast as prescribed. Is a resource to MRI students and other technologists to ensure optimal department functions. 

 

Obtains pertinent patient history, reviews physician orders for accuracy prior to performing exam. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of MR principles and theory, anatomy and pathology processes utilizing the most appropriate technique and/or positioning for optimal examinations, as demonstrated by exam results.

 

Monitors and maintains essential patient care and safety during procedures, applies safety principles as identifed by established policy. Ensures safe patient handling and transport. Ensures proper policies and procedures for day-to-day MR safety are enforced.

 

Creates, enforces and audits MR safe practices. Develops, documents and introduces in conjunction with the radiologists safe working procedures for the MR environment. Ensures that medical, technical, nursing and all other relevant staff groups (including ancillary workers) who may be exposed to the MR environment are educated appropriately on a regular basis as to the safety requirements and updated as necessary, Mainains records of the personnel who have been educated appropriately as to the safety requirements.

 

Ensures equipment is functioning properly, troubleshoots malfunctions, and submits work orders as appropriate. Performs routine quality control as required by manufacturer and regulatory requirements. Maintains order and cleanliness of rooms and equipment following infection control guidelines.

 

Demonstrates the ability to recognize clinical and/or emergent problems that may interfere with exams and takes appropriate action to resolve them and produce the most desirable outcome. Ensures written safety procedures, work instructions, emergency procedures and operating instructions are issued to all approriate staff. Provides safety advice on the modification of MR protocols.

 

Ensures compliance with legal issues including but not limited to patient confidentiality and risk management, ensures compliance with accrediting and regulatory agencies. Keeps current on MR safety guidelines. Serves as a resource for all MRI safety questions. Ensures that there is a clear process for the purchasing, testing and marking of all equipment that will be taken into the MR-related critical areas (Zones 3 & 4).

 

Assists Director with staff training and orientation. Assists in other areas when needed.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited school of radiologic technology
Experience: 2+ years in MRI 
Licenses & Certifications: CRT and ARRT (R) (MR) Credentials.  Current BLS and Venipuncture Certification.  Must take and pass the MRSO registry within one year.
Required Skills & Knowledge: Ability to perform MRI diagnostic imaging that adheres to department and hospital protocol, policies, and procedures; Excellent written and oral communication skills (bilingual a plus); Commitment to excellence and high standards while working with people at all levels and from various backgrounds

Compensation

Actual compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
