Overview

Under the supervision of the Director of Diagnostic Services, the Lead Ultrasound & Imaging Service Technologist is a diagnostic imaging professional responsible for leading the daily operations of the Ultrasound department while also supporting broader diagnostic imaging services. This role is approximately 60% focused on ultrasound operations, patient care, and quality performance, including taking call and working regular shifts in the ultrasound staffing rotation. The remaining 40% is focused on the broader Diagnostic Imaging department, across all imaging modalities, and include staff scheduling, mentoring, and workflow oversight, as needed. This position plays a critical leadership role in ensuring excellence in clinical operations.

Responsibilities

Leads daily workflow and clinical operations within the Ultrasound department to maintain high performance, efficiency, and patient care standards. Participates in the Ultrasound call rotation and scheduled clinical shifts to ensure full departmental coverage.

 

Oversees all imaging service schedules, including technologist assignments and patient appointments to ensure accuracy and optimal workflow.

 

Provides coaching and mentoring of Ultrasound Technologists, facilitating cross-training and professional development. Promotes a collaborative, respectful, and team-based work environment.

 

Acts as a liaison between technologists and the Director of Diagnostic Services; Provides cross-modality leadership, supporting radiography, CT, MRI, and other departments as needed.

 

Supports departmental compliance with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards (e.g., ACR, HIPAA, OSHA). Monitors compliance with infection control and safety protocols specific to ultrasound.

 

Performs and oversees high-quality ultrasound examinations across various specialties (Abdomen, RVT, OB/GYN, etc.). Reviews physician orders, obtains pertinent history, and ensures all studies meet diagnostic standards. Supports radiologists with interventional procedures, maintaining strict sterile technique.

 

Performs routine ultrasound equipment quality control and arranges maintenance/service as needed. Assists in other areas such as reception duties and clerical responsibilities and assists Director with staff schedule and timecard maintenance in the electronic Time & Attendance system, as needed.

Qualifications

Education: Graduate of an accredited sonographer program.

Experience: Minimum 3 years of diagnostic ultrasound experience, preferably in a lead or senior technologist role. Experience coordinating or supervising imaging services is strongly preferred.

Licenses & Certifications: Valid ARDMS: Abdomen and RVT (OB/GYN, MSKS or Breast a plus); BLS 

Required Skills & Knowledge: Strong leadership skillls with the ability to understand and adhere to established policies, procedures and protocols. Commitment to excellence and high standards; Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrated ultrasound clinical excellence, including a full range of diagnostic protocols. Ability to manage clinical operations, resolve workflow issues, and lead by example; strong understanding of scheduling strategies and techniques; Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage priorities, and foster a positive team culture. Knowledable with imaging systems (PACS, EMR, scheduling software).

Compensation

Actual compensation takes into account several factors including but not limited to a candidate’s experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, department equity, training and organizational needs. Eligible roles also qualify for a comprehensive benefits package.
