Overview

Prioritizes and accurately performs a wide variety of clinical laboratory tests on various biological specimens based on established clinical procedures. Reviews, evaluates, documents and reports results. Preserves confidentiality of patients and follows lab safety and maintenance protocols. 

Responsibilities

Performs various testing in all departments (chemistry, coagulation, hematology, special chemistry, urinalysis, blood bank, serology, microbiology) following prescribed quality assurance policies and procedures.


Performs, evaluates and documents quality control and maintenance checks for (Daily, Weekly and Monthly) in all departments to include temperature logs, discarding of old specimens and rotation of specimen racks for storage.

 
Reviews testing results and evaluating the validity of results in comparison to anticipated results indicated per procedure manual.


Thoroughly documents and communicates test results, expediting all critical values and results to appropriate doctors and clinicians. Documents adverse events using incident reporting tool.


Performs equipment and instrumentation maintenance on designated instruments including (Triage), Instruments shutdown, troubleshooting and calibration as needed. 


Perform daily culture setup and gram stain in microbiology department when needed and other miscellaneous rapid testing in the department.


Performs and reviews blood bank inventory and order units when needed. Performs Inventories and restocks reagents, calibrators, controls and supplies for all departments as needed.


Print out and review daily in-patient orders. Verify and complete logs books. Print out and review daily manual work list of all departments.


Orients, instructs and supervises laboratory assistants and clerks as needed.


Performs other job-related duties as assigned. Keep all work stations in the department clean.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree (B.A./B.S) in related field or equivalent. 
Experience: Demonstrated knowledge of accepted clinical laboratory practice and procedures including proper procurement of specimens, handling and disposing of potentially infectious material, and familiarity with California law relating to the practice of medical technology. 
Licenses & Certifications: Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license.
Required Skills & Knowledge: Excellent written and oral communication skills. Strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills. Versatility, flexibility and a willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm. Ability to effectively communicate with people at all levels and from various backgrounds.

Compensation

Actual compensation is influenced by a wide array of factors including but not limited to level of experience, education, special skills and/or certifications.
