The Assistant Engineer works as a team member in Plant Operations Team and provides receiving and distribution back-up coverage for Materials Management. Under the direction of the Lead Engineer, this position ensures that our main and off-site facilities are in good working order by addressing minor repairs and performing regular maintenance tasks.
Perform assigned preventive maintenance program tasks in a professional manner. Understand the sequence of operation of the assigned equipment and its role in the facility. Communicate with Lead Engineer regarding any unsafe conditions, damaged equipment or supplies needed. Complete documention of completed tasks at the end of each day.
Inspect buildings, rooms, equipment and grounds for unsafe or malfunctioning conditions by conducting assigned rounds. Document and analyze collected information and readings and take actions to correct deficiencies if needed. Report out of specs conditions to the Lead Engineer and Engineering Coordinator.
Independently perform basic building repairs, including patching, painting, and drywall repairs, changing light bulbs, leaking faucets and minor repairs as directed to HVAC, plumbing and electrical components.
Respond to service calls from the floors and Engineering Coordinator to perform necessary troubleshooting and repairs. Communicate effectively with Engineering Coordinator and customers about work done and any delays/progress. Demonstrate excellent customer service to hospital staff, patients, and visitors by professionally responding to all customer inquiries.
Work alongside other Engineers and vendors to provide troubleshooting and repairs to facility equipment: electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and other building components/equipment.
Participate in fire/life safety protocols of the facility, including fire drills in the hospital and off site facilities. Perform fire watch duties as assigned to support construction related activities.
Maintain equipment rooms, engineering and paint shop and storage areas in a clean and organized condition. Clean all equipment in the Central Utility Plant per schedule.
Provide receiving and distribution support coverage in the Materials Management department, as assigned. Receive, sign and check-in deliveries at loading dock. Verify items and quantities received; match the orders prior to stocking supplies. Distribute supplies throughout hospital and maintain established par levels in departments. Rotate stock adhering to FIFO method. Promptly remove any outdated product and follow department protocol for disposing of product. Notify appropriate staff of stock outages to ensure adequate availability. Assist with physical inventory counts as needed.
Assist in the inventory, stocking and storage of Engineering and Clinical Engineering supplies and parts.
Perform the set-up or breakdown of events, including moving, arranging or building furniture, set-up of temporary ventilation, refrigeration, and construction/maintenance barriers.
Perform special projects as assigned. Works various shifts and hours as needed.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Minimum of two years previous work experience with similar equipment, preferably in a hospital environment.
Licenses & Certifications: Certificate in HVAC, building maintenance technology, or relevant field is a plus.
Required Skills & Knowledge: Basic understanding, skills and experience in plumbing, HVAC and/or electrical trades. Knowledge of basic computer skills and ability to operate software programs. Working alone and in team. Understanding of potential hazards involved with working in mechanical spaces and equipment rooms in the facility and taking appropriate precautions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Effectively communicate with department manager, coordinator, engineers and hospital staff. Follow verbal and written directions; demonstrate mechanical ability; keep accurate records
