Performs a variety of clerical tasks associated with the processing and maintenance of patient medical records such as prepping, scanning and indexing. Provides assistance to internal and external customers. Assists patients with requests for medical records.
Performs reception duties by answering phone in professional manner and processing phone requests promptly. Answers incoming calls, determines purpose of caller and forwards to appropriate personnel as necessary. Takes and delivers messages or transfers calls as appropriate. Welcomes internal customers and external visitors, determines nature of their business and directs to appropriate personnel if unable to personally provide assistance.
Seeks assistance from HIM coordinator or HIM manager as needed.
Performs daily rounds of picking up patient records in specified locations within the hospital; performs reconciliation of charts against daily list and follows up on any missing charts.
Performs release of information duties by processing patient walk in requests for records, patient phone calls regarding request process and providing records when they become available if not available at time of request.
Processes fax requests for patient records in a timely manner in order to facilitate continuity of care.
Performs prepping, scanning and indexing of emergency room, inpatient, ambulatory surgery or ancillary department records
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: At least one year of previous experience in acute care hospital setting or similar setting with patient medical records and reception duties.

Required Skills & Knowledge: Possess skills related to customer service, answering phones and assisting patients in person. Knowledge of medical records and electronic medical record systems and processing of medical records.
